5 years ago Version 2 hi chris if you see this can you make a story like how I made mine I want it to be like a surviver thing like a video game
5 years ago chris commented: Hi! This story seems to be pretty plot-driven; it doesn't seem like it wants to be too open-ended. Let me suggest some ways to enhance the playability of this story, and then I'll suggest another format you could consider writing for your technical story. I think it would be neat if some of the choices came back together in this story--for example, right now if you buy a hat at Spencer's, you have to go to Applebee's. And if you buy a jacket, you have to go to Golden Corral. Why should this be? This would give the player more choices without making the story too complicated. Then you can use variables to keep track of what the player chose before, to add little details later on (like while you're fighting, if you just bought a new jacket you might think about how it's going to get all messed up). Players like that and it helps it feel real. For an example, check out One fine morning. If that code doesn't make sense let me know.

It's really a combination of a map (Map of places) and variables that keep track of the player's condition as he/she moves around (we call this state in CS). This is the basis for all kinds of adventure games. You could fork The wanderer if you want, or start a story like it. I usually like to start by drawing a map and thinking about possible quests or storylines the player might have in different parts of the map. Then I'll add characters, etc. Let me know if you want help.

5 years ago chris commented: Grab a copy of the handout called "Variables" from the center table when you get a chance--I think all the green code used in that story is described on this handout. If it still doesn't make sense, I'll fork the escape room and add long comments at each piece of green code explaining what it does :)
